When chewed, the flowers and leaves increase salivation and have a numbing effect on the mucus membranes of the mouth. They have long been used among the indigenous people of Amazonia to stimulate appetite and to treat various mouth and throat ailments, most notably toothache.
Grows naturally in humid subtropical and tropical climates, generally frost-free areas with annual lows of 12 to 26 °C, annual highs of 23 to 35 °C, annual rainfall of 1200 to 5000 mm and a dry season of 4 months or less.
